sleep, eat, movie, sleep, program, sleep
That was basically my plan for today (Saturday). I got up, in time for lunch, featuring many varieties of gourmet pizza (i.e. pizza with rabbit food on top) but I opted for the ones with pepperoni. I wish they’d use a spicier sauce, but I like things spicier than most people. After pizza, we watched movies in Jeff’s room (he has a TV).
Come to think of it, there aren’t many TVs on base. I can think of two, Jeff’s, and the one in the library. Both are only used for watching videos and DVDs. We get no TV channels here. My friend Jeremy brought up the fact that commercials for satellite TV back at home say that you need unobstructed view of the southern sky, and we certainly have that, so I don’t see what the problem is.
Anyway, after the movies, I went back to my room to get some programming done; modifying my ITCAn software (IceTop water Cherenkov ANalisys software, or just ITCAN; so Luke doesn’t have to (in reference to my coworker last summer)) to read the data that I’ve taken here. However, I just went to sleep. When I woke up (around 2:30am) I worked on my program, realized how long and complicated it was, and decided that I either needed to put lots of it into different functions or go all out and put it into another programming language, that lets me put my program into smaller components (objects). I’m not quite sure which way I’m going to go yet, so I’ll just start putting it into functions.
In other news; I’ve figured out my yo-yo to the point where I can actually get it to return reliably. What can I say? I’ve always been an athletic person. With my rise in interest in the yo-yo, the silly putty has been somewhat neglected, but there’s only so much you can do with putty.
As to the pictures that I posted the other day, an obvious omission has been me near the pole (either the real one or the ceremonial one). The reason I don’t have any of those pictures is that for most of my time here, it has been sunny, but no wind. So the flags have been very droopy. Now we have wind, but it’s overcast, and I’d rather have a picture that is more characteristic of the bright, cheerful weather that we have here. So, I’ve put it off until I can get a good picture. Maybe that will happen tomorrow, we’ll see.
Speaking of tomorrow, Shigeru, Jeff and I will be removing some insulation from the wall of one of our tanks to try to get it to freeze faster. It’s not going to be a very interesting task, but we evidently have three people who want to come watch us work. All I know is that one of them is an author, who is working on a book about the south pole, and the work being done here. I guess removing insulation is just more interesting at the south pole.
I guess I should get back to work, then breakfast, and then back to sleep until it’s time to remove that insulation.
Thanks for reading,
